A New York nurse has become the first American to receive the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine – marking the beginning of one of the most significant inoculation campaigns in the United States’ history.

Sandra Lindsay – an intensive care nurse from Queens – received the jab during a press conference with Governor Andrew Cuomo. New York state was one of the worst affected states in the US, with more than 361,000 residents infected with the virus and more than 35,000 deaths.

“I feel like healing is coming, I hope this marks the beginning to the end of the very painful time in our history," Ms Lindsay said, following her vaccination. Mr Cuomo also celebrated the vaccine, saying "this vaccine is exciting because I believe this is the weapon that will end the war, it’s the beginning of the last chapter of the book." President-elect Joe Biden and outgoing-president Donald Trump both reacted to the news on Twitter, praising the outcome.
