Tough new border restrictions have come into effect in Australia, sending thousands of new arrivals to quarantine in hotels for two weeks.

Travellers are being quarantined at the airport at which they entered Australia, meaning they will not be able to board a connecting domestic flight.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison is yet to confirm the cost of the program but says it will be paid by states and territories. Image: News Corp Australia
