Australia's 'needlessly complex' skilled migration system should be revamped to ensure the nation can attract the workers it needs, a new report says.

Report lead author David Rumbens said government spending had buoyed the labour market but warned it was now largely up to the private sector to keep it going.

"More than net 29,000 people arrived in the December 2021 quarter, although that only unwinds around 26 per cent of the net 113,000 people lost to overseas migration over the previous 18 months.", Deloitte partner Fiona Webb urged Australia to show it was "open for business" by cutting red tape. This was in the context, the report found, of the economy shifting to a more skilled and knowledge-based workforce, with jobs in the sector forecast to grow around 2.

"The highest order priority is to clearly signal to the world that Australia is open for business. Our pandemic-era border policies created a lingering level of uncertainty among potential skilled migrants.

Australia has had a culture of keeping people out. Now, surprise, surprise, they need people so a lot of rules and attitudes need to be changed

You just open a BNO visa holder and everyone will bring more skills and millions in bank to Australia. Scomo policy need to change

We used to have excellent training programs here in TAFE but this has been decimated by the LNP. Terrible we now have to import so called skilled people.

The entire purpose of the skilled migration scheme is to get cheap labour and drive down the salary of Australians.

Immigation is one thing, protecting them from racial discrimination is another.

Only if the new system ensures that any skilled migrants are (a) genuinely needed to fill real skill gaps & (b) are required to be given the exact same wages and conditions as an Australian-born worker doing that same job.

How about starting to report the 'skilled' professions that we need to import. This could and will help direct new students within Australia into those professions.
