The world No.1 was comfortably beaten in the third round of the Italian Open, two days after being struck on the head by a bottle that fell from a fan’s backpack.

A “concerned” Novak Djokovic will undergo medical tests after feeling the effects of being struck on the head by a bottle in his shock exit from the Italian Open.

“It was unexpected, obviously. I wasn’t even looking up,” Djokovic said after his defeat to Tabilo. “Then I felt a very strong hit in the head. That has, yeah, really impacted me a lot. Been through half an hour, an hour of nausea, dizziness, blood, a lot of different things. It was Djokovic’s fifth defeat in 17 outings this year. He remains top of the world rankings, but stands at a relatively lowly 12th in the ATP’s “Race to Turin” – a chart which counts results only for the 2024 season. It means Djokovic will go to the French Open – which starts in two weeks – dealing with an unprecedented lack of match practice.

Tabilo, a Canadian who plays under the Chilean flag, deserves some credit. While not a familiar name, Tabilo has climbed high enough to be seeded at the majors since winning his maiden ATP title in January.
