The regent of Indonesia's Natuna Islands has called for Western powers — including Australia — to open their chequebooks and invest in the strategically vital island, while pointedly declaring Chinese investment is not welcome.

He said investment from other countries who support the South China Sea remaining free and open would be "about business, not so much about politics".

It is the first time a public official has said Chinese investment was not welcome, and the first call for Australia to invest. Chinese investment is not welcome: Natuna's Bupati Abdul Hamid Rizal.Ronnie Indra, the head of the Natuna Regency's Co-operation Department, said American officials had indicated the US Trade and Development Agency could be willing to invest in a new airport.

The South China Sea is a strategically vital waterway, in part, because about one third of the world's cargo transits it. It is also rich in marine, oil and gas resources.

Greens urge govt to nationalise Qantas International | Sky News AustraliaThe Greens are calling for the government to consider nationalising Qantas International if the beleaguered airline continues to require taxpayer assistance.\n\nQantas CEO Alan Joyce announced on Thursday the airline will axe 6,000 staff on top of 15,000 employees who were already stood down amid the coronavirus crisis.\n\nIn addition to 6,000 job cuts and 15,000 people stood down, Qantas will also ground up to 100 planes for 12 months. \n\nThe airline’s shares have been placed in a trading halt as it plans to raise up to $1.9 billion in equity to strengthen the company’s financials and accelerate recovery.\n\nMr Bandt told Sky News the government should attach conditions if Qantas continues to ask for public bailouts.\n\n'If the government is talking about ongoing assistance packages of other kinds, that perhaps might come in coming months, then I think we have to look at the conditions that is attached to those,' he said.\n\n'I think we need to have an open and active public ownership of Qantas international, I don't want us to become an island country without a fully functioning airline.'\n\n'You have got to ask the question, is it the right thing to do to continue to provide assistance to help Qantas' bottom line when we can't be guaranteed that money is going to help the workers?\n\nWhen, alternatively, if you are providing that assistance through public ownership of Qantas International you could be guaranteed you could keep the jobs and have a functioning airline.'\n\n How is that going to help. I switch channel whenever a green comes on, just fyi. The tail is already red. A hammer and sickle overlay would be easy. Approved.

Govt's 'hands off' approach will undoubtedly lead to 'scaled-back Virgin Australia' | Sky News AustraliaShadow Transport Minister Catherine King says the government's 'hands off' approach will undoubtedly lead to 'scaled-back Virgin Australia'. \n\nPrivate equity fund Bain Capital is set to be the airline’s new owner after New York hedge fund Cyrus Capital Partners withdrew its offer. \n\nBain Capital said it was prepared to honour the $450 million of entitlements owed to workers once it took control. \n\nDespite this guarantee, Ms King told Sky News Virgin jobs and regional routes would inevitably be lost. \n\n“That’s an outcome that’s incredibly disappointing from the public’s point of view,' she said. \n\n“Loss of routes, particularly in regional Queensland, will be absolutely devastating for tourism and I think that’s what we’re going to see, a much scaled-back Virgin.” \n\nShe said Labor encouraged the Morrison government to take an equity stake in Virgin and prevent it entering administration. \n\n“But the government’s obviously decided to take a very hands-off approach and this is the result,” she said. \n\nImage: News Corp Australia \n CatherineKingMP and rightly so CatherineKingMP Great to see the AustralianLabor jumping on the rhetoric bandwagon again this morning.
