'Taxpayer money must not be used to fund coal-fired power stations': Labor MP | Sky News AustraliaLabor frontbencher Michelle Rowland has taken aim at the government’s decision to use a publicly funded feasibility study for political gain. \n\nSpeaking to Sky News on Tuesday, the shadow communications minister repeated her party line that a Labor government would not allow public money to fund a new coal-fired power station. \n\n“Labor has made it very clear that we don’t support taxpayer funds being put into new coal-fired power stations and we’re not alone there, the same people saying that include everyone from Malcolm Turnbull to the member for North Sydney to the member for Wentworth,” Ms Rowland said. \n\nThe Morrison Government on the weekend announced it would commission a $4 million feasibility study into a proposed coal-fired power station in Queensland, a move Ms Rowland insisted was politically motivated. \n\n“The government has a political objective here, in seeking to gain support for what it’s doing, they’re choosing to do that with taxpayers’ money,” she said. \n\nHowever Ms Rowland said her party would not stand in the way of a project that met all the checks and balances. \n\n“It’s not a matter of Labor standing in the way. It’s a matter of applying the regulations as they stand, environmental and other planning approvals,” she said. \n\n “Labor recognises that coal will continue to play an important role in our energy mix in the decades to come. We are not going to be a party that abandons people who work in the coal sector.\n\n“If Australia isn’t selling coal to export markets, someone else will.” \n Does the Labor Party lead by EachWayAlbo even have a coal policy? Labor will not use 'scarce' taxpayer funds on coal-fire power stations | Sky News AustraliaLabor will not use 'scarce taxpayer money' to underwrite coal-fire power plants, according to Labor frontbencher Joel Fitzgibbon.\n\nCoal has divided the Coalition party room, with a number of Nationals MPs urging the government to underwrite a new coal-fired power station in Queensland, which is the subject of a $4 million feasibility study.\n\nHowever, moderate Liberals have argued against taking government energy policy in that direction.\n\nThe comments come after Nationals backbencher Matt Canavan dubbed renewables the “dole bludgers” of the energy system. \n\nSpeaking with Sky News host Chris Kenny, Mr Fitzgibbon said Labor will not use taxpayer money 'to make something commercial when it is not commercial'. Taxpayers money is only scarce when it’s ideologically convenient. Here’s an idea... how about we put a hold on overseas donations to pay for it... ya know do something for the taxpayers that will deliver a ROI 🤔 Nationals should put in a candidate in Hunter who is pro coal. They would win the seat easily So whats he going to waste it on then
