Even energy-conscious consumers who have reduced their power usage are being slugged with higher bills thanks to rising fixed daily charges.

"We're seeing a lot of reforms happening in the energy market, a lot of pressure on retailers and they need to recover their costs through bills," AEC chief executive Sarah McNamara said.

For much of the east coast, the energy regulator sets a default market offer , which acts like a fall-back plan for customers who have not actively chosen a retailer. The DMO usually acts like a price ceiling and retailers compete for customers by offering deals cheaper than that. However, now, some electricity retailers are offering plans that are more expensive than the default market offer."But it is a market that is struggling with its own resilience in an environment of rising costs and shrinking margins as well."

In a remarkable move, a number of small electricity companies have told their customers to go elsewhere, or face a huge hike in their power bills. It is not profitable for some to continue to service customers and four small companies have already collapsed."That means there's less opportunity to shop around and find cheaper electricity prices."

The competition watchdog is monitoring retailer pricing and will provide an update to energy ministers later this month.

let her know her internet is on at the time of taking the pic which doesn't equal to bare minimum

Well those fixed fees keep going through the roof. So much the many retailers driving down the prices. They all on the bandwagon now to rip us off. How many board/executives and levels of management are being duplicated including profit?

Really I'm on the DSP I rent, pay my electric gas and water bills on time also pay for therapy and my Parkinsons medication and I can afford it and I'm not going without. So either people can't look after money or I'm effing excellent at budgeting.

Elbow and Labor care nothing for the poor. they represent the social elite who are wealthy. they care nothing for anyone at all...they need their'climate change action' to increase their wealth and Labor/Greens only to happy to assist. which will crush the poor further...

Terrible. Agree. The daily supply charge is 3 times my usage charge. I can’t get it down any further unless I cut off power altogether. I’m in Sydney. It’s colder here.

Thanks, renewables!

So much of the utility costs in Australia are artificial - profiteering, dodgy export deals, corrupt govt, lack of investment, etc. At the opposite end of the cost spectrum, my last month of bills were: lecky $16, water $24, gas $8 and internet $28. I live in Mexico.

The rise in bills is due to the subs paid to those who put on solar passed onto people who either cannot afford it or are living in units or rental homesThere is nothing cheap about these renewables as the taxpayers subsidise themThe money Wasted to date would build 15 coal plant

Get used to this with electricity, only going to get worse. Meanwhile, my gas bill this quarter was exactly the same as same quarter last year. No increase.

Look at the comments… the left don’t care at all about the poor… zero concern for the less fortunate

Someone has to pay for all the new poles & wires, the grid batteries, the hydro, all required to support useless wind & solar… The poor suffer AND THE LEFT DONT GIVE TWO SHITS

Actually the facts are Supply costs were raised to cover upgrades to regulators needed to allow for erratic solar. According to my contacts in Energex Plus Government privatised additional billing layer like AGL and Origin now profits go more ways to compete

Hilarious. Where did you find Natalie? Dear oh dear...

You will own nothing and will be happy.

As if Trump ‘snuck’ nuclear launch codes into a pair of Melania’s Jimmy Choo’s: MorrowThere is a lot about the government's story over the FBI raid of Donald Trump's Florida home that 'doesn't stack up', Sky News host James Morrow says. 'We are being asked to believe that government officials knew Trump was holding on to top secret material, maybe including stuff about nuclear weapons, in his basement for a year and a half,' Mr Morrow said. 'We also know the government actually spent time looking at and retrieving other documents some months ago. 'Then decided now ... to go in with a full complement of FBI officers, who did not let Trump's lawyers observe the search, while they even rummaged through even his wife's walk-in closet. 'As if he'd snuck the launch codes into a pair of her Jimmy Choo's.' Mr Morrow said if the former US president did indeed have top secret nuclear material, then police would have been 'knocking on his door' much sooner. 'Instead, though, this looks like a political stunt organised by Attorney-General Merrick Garland whose nomination for the Supreme Court Trump pulled when he came to power.' Fake news Garbage! 🤮 I am shocked to see Sky News wildly speculating to try and defend Trump.
