High Court Judge Mohamad Nazlan Ghazali sentenced Najib to 12 years in jail on one count of abuse of power, 10 years each for three counts of criminal breach of trust, and 10 years each for three counts of money laundering, as well as a fine of 210 million ringgit . But he ordered the sentences to run concurrently, meaning that Najib will face up to 12 years in jail.
It is the first of several trials Najib faces over a multibillion-dollar corruption scandal at the 1Malaysia Development Berhad , a state sovereign fund he founded. The former leader arrived in court to shouts of "long live Najib" by hundreds of supporters who had gathered outside. Najib himself appeared calm, albeit stony-faced."This is my chance to clear my name," Najib said earlier in a Facebook post on Monday night.
