A leading Korean academic and a comedian have defended the Sydney Film Festival prize-winning Mukbang against claims it is culturally insensitive and part of a “white supremacist” tendency in the Australian film industry

against claims it is culturally insensitive and part of a “white supremacist” tendency in the Australian film industry.

"How does this internet phenomenon lead to this girl's sexual awakening? It's a fantastic premise for a film, I want to see it," Dr Park said. Equating a white filmmaker referencing Korean culture to "white supremacism" is misguided, said Mr Choi. "It's like saying white people can't listen to Korean music. Maybe the eating disorder lobby should get more offended rather than Koreans."

The film was clearly a Western interpretation of mukbang but Dr Maliangkaij said he didn't think adopting a part of a culture in this way intrinsically amounted to cultural appropriation.

White supremacist?

Why do we never hear about other countries appropriating 1) ford mass manufactured cars, today most cars are created in Japan and Korea... is this appropriation? 2) 1st cell phones were made in America, now mostly made in Korea, Japan and assembled in China... appropriation?

Damn sounds like common sense talking .. how the hell did that make into the papers ?

Cultures should to be appropriated anyway. It’s how we learn about each other & swap ideas. If the Italians didn’t appropriate Chinese culture we wouldn’t have spaghetti bolognese. History is full of it.
