As designers rush to put their own stamp on the style, celebrities have been snapped in tie-dyed everything during COVID-19 | SamanthaSMorris

When Mordechai Rubinstein first started wearing his beloved tie-dye T-shirts to fashion week shows in New York, London and Milan in 2010, it marked him as a pariah.

It makes sense. Because tie-dye launches are coming thick and fast: in the last couple of months alone, everything from sneakers to hair scrunchies and a makeup collection – gradient eyeshadow palettes and a green and yellow glitter gel –from the brand Colourpop have featured the look.deemed the look, prior to last year, as “dead as a doornail”, it keeps coming back on the runway every couple of years. Brands like Christian Dior, Proenza Schouler and Stella McCartney repeatedly embrace it.

Bigeni would know. He’s just launched a capsule collection of tie-dyed basics in fluorescent colours – a pencil skirt, T-shirts, a dress and bike shorts, in a blotchy pattern in lime and navy, and hot pink and orange – after being inundated by requests afterhost Melissa Leong wore one of his technicolour tie-dye dresses on the show earlier this year.

“People are looking for uniqueness, and things that are a bit more individual, a bit more handmade, not mass produced,” says Deborah Sams, co-founder of Sydney brand bassike, whose run of mottled dyed T-shirts, pants and jumpers sold out numerous times last year. They were all – as are Bigeni’s pieces – made one by one.
