Prime Minister Scott Morrison says he's in Vietnam to advocate for the sovereignty of Indo-Pacific nations where countries in the region “can make their own decisions”.

Mr Morrison told the media on Friday “it isn’t about picking sides, it’s about ensuring that each and every nation in this region can have confidence in its own independence and its own sovereignty”. “I’ve come here to advocate for things, not against things.” Vietnam formally requested Australia's support to keep key trade routes open in the South China Sea amid growing Chinese pressure.
