Prime Minister Scott Morrison has kicked off his visit to Vietnam with pointed remarks about protecting the sovereignty of nations in the Indo-Pacific.

Mr Morrison started his two-day visit with a business dinner where trade was on the agenda, with the growing dominance of China also front of mind. He is the first Australian Prime Minister to make a bi-lateral visit to Vietnam, showing how important they are becoming as an ally.

While not directly referencing China, the Prime Minister’s speech included comments on supporting sovereignty of nations in the Indo-Pacific and declared if Australia’s neighbours "suffer coercion then we are all diminished". The evening included the announcement of $5 million to establish the Australia Vietnam Centre at the Ho Chi Min National Academy of Politics.
