'More balance': The selective schools with the shortest commutes | JordsBaker

While some students are travelling more than 100 kilometres a day to get to some of the state's top fully selective schools, many of the families choosing a partially selective option are sticking closer to home.

In contrast, students at fully selective schools such as Penrith, Gosford or the prestigious Sydney Boys' High are doing averageRevelations of the long trips prompted calls for catchments for selective schools, which advocates say will reduce the amount of travel time for students, and ensure the schools better reflect the communities around them.

Baulkham Hills High, a highly sought-after fully selective school that is often on the HSC honour roll, also has a relatively local catchment. The average one-way commute is 10km from suburbs such as Baulkham Hills, Castle Hill and Westmead. "They offer opportunities for students to interact with other students across a range of ability and achievement levels," he said. "However students at these schools may not get the full range of opportunities that students in fully selective schools might get."

'No time to be kids': The students travelling 100km a day for selective schoolsStudents are travelling from one side of the city to another to attend selective schools, prompting calls for local catchments to be introduced. JordsBaker Nigelgladstone Not to mention the hours, weeks, months, years they were forced to study their backsides off, intensive coaching etc. to get in. We all know who they are. Completely miserable kids and the wrong type for the future. It’s a broken system that needs to be changed urgently. JordsBaker Nigelgladstone I attended a selective school in the 90s, met some of the most talented kids. Some did brilliant things in life. I know at least a dozen kids today who started intensive coaching in yr 2 for selective school. 100% the wrong mould but they are confident they will get in. So wrong.

Maybe it's the GenZ work experience kid handling Frydenberg's Twitter account?

Students 'might roll their eyes' but this is why your school needs a wellbeing leaderThe Productivity Commission wants a Daisy Turnbull Brown - a designated director of wellbeing - in every school. Maybe! Maybe not! What narrative will the wellbeing leader be pushing? May be we need better parenting. When both parents work & children only see them briefly this is not good. Actually once you have water, food & shelter the next thing you need is good parenting. The hardest but most rewarding job: parenting. Parenting by someone else? Not ideal. how precious we have all become

Adults are finding joy in their after-school activities from childhoodA growing number of Australian men and women are taking up activities they enjoyed as kids, such as roller skating, tap dance, ballet and gymnastics, in the latest fitness trend, which participants say is as good for their 'mind and soul' as it is for their bodies. The infantilisation of our society continues. You’ve just captured the type of ppl that read your dust bin paper liner, adults being children again. The inner city Sydney and Melbourne ppl who act like ignorant children all the time. woke Often I find myself searching for adult dance classes but can never find them, gone are the days of the dance studios where you could do a jazz, ballet, contemporary, Afro jazz drop in adult dance classes. Ah the 80s. Actually this has nothing to do with the article. Amateurs.
