Rio Tinto offers $4 million towards rebuilding flood-ravaged Fitzroy Crossing in WA's north, as payment for the painstaking search to find a tiny radioactive capsule it lost last month.

abc.net.au/news/rio-tinto-to-rebuild-fitzroy-crossing-for-capsule-search/102046570Mining company Rio Tinto will provide a mobile worker camp to help rebuild flood-damaged Fitzroy Crossing, in lieu of payment for the cost of the massive search for a missing radioactive capsule.

The radioactive capsule, measured here against a 10-cent coin, fell off the back of a truck south of Newman. Following discussions between Rio and Emergency Services Minister Stephen Dawson, it has been agreed that instead of a cash payment, Rio will provide accommodation for workers sent to the Kimberley to rebuild homes and infrastructure after January's devastating floods.

"We really want to support the efforts to rebuild the Kimberley following those devastating floods," he said.

Mining giant should just pay for it. I can’t pay fines by bartering, so why should a mining giant be able to?

Rio Tinto . Blows up cave drawings 40,000 years old and loses a radioactive capsule .too many people have shares in them as it should be a huge outcry

Fix the town as that is something tangible. If there’s no swimming pool, build one.

Rebuilding the town is great, what do they plan on doing after that?

Green washing. Optics. Pay a fine or rebuild flood-damaged town?

Why can’t they do both?

I hope that the next time I have to pay for something that I stuff up, I can simply make a Tax Deductable payment, and be done with it. Did they get fined for mishandling the radioactive substance?

So they can claim it all back as a tax deduction.🤷🤦‍♂️

For a tax write off.
