Julia Gillard: Millions of children may never return to school after lockdown

About 1.5 billion young learners – 90 per cent of the world’s schoolchildren – are or have been locked out of school. About 810 million are in low and middle-income countries, where even before COVID-19, there were significant barriers to learning, especially for the poorest and most marginalised children.

Julia Gillard with Hugh Evans, CEO of youth charity Global Citizen, and pop star Rihanna, an ambassador for The Global Partnership For Education, in Malawi. As tough as it is, we are in a much more fortunate position than many around the world. Imagine going through all this without a decent, universal healthcare system. Or without adequate food. Or knowing that even when schools reopen, the pandemic has ended your children’s chance for an education.

Past experience tells us the problems are greater for girls. After the Ebola epidemic in Sierra Leone closed schools for eight months, thousands of adolescent girls were unable to resume their education because they were married as child brides, got pregnant or had to work to feed their families. Without dramatic action, COVID-19 may well result in as many as 20 million girls not returning when schools reopen. For girls and boys alike, the consequences go far beyond lost learning.

In the coming months and years, countries will face difficult choices. GDPs will decline, shrinking their tax bases and restricting their capacity to mobilise resources. Learning cannot be seen as a luxury or an optional extra. Investing in education should be the bedrock of our plans to build strong and fair societies that can enhance economic growth, limit global warming and harness the unrivalled technological opportunities of the 21st century.

Unsettling, I don't think parents are capable of educating their children properly no matter how well meaning they are.

This is so confusing. I thought all Specialist Schools were remaining open, but this article says only the regional ones? Please, nobody underestimate the challenges this poses for teachers.

State's schools, childcare centres to close for most childrenIn a change from the first lockdown period, childcare centres in Melbourne will also be closed to most families, with only vulnerable children and the children of a tighter list of 'permitted workers' allowed to attend. Our awful panicdemic. Asher_Wolf presumably only the vulnerable children whose parents can afford childcare. We need free child care right now, and better wages and conditions for child care workers. This is Dan Andrews given himself something 'important' to do. He isn't going to like the bill for his fun, so like a junkie he keeps using to avoid reality.

Victorian students will head back home for lessonsMost Victorian schools and students will move to “flexible and remote learning” from Wednesday as part of tough new lockdown restrictions across the state, Victorian Premier Andrew Daniels announced on Sunday. hcqcures terrorism Should have done this sooner. People are idiots and were never going to take the restrictions seriously. Hint 1 was when everyone was stocking toilet paper instead of essentials. You are robbing our children of their education.
