Fears for Australia's agricultural industry as concerning study finds large amount of microplastics in organic fertiliser and soil

Picture: Supplied While Australia’s ag-sector is worth $80b annually, the study will come as a major shock to the ever expanding organic market, with the product considered green, plentiful and cheap.
Many of the plastic particles are released when washing polyester or nylon clothes, along with the cleaning and beauty products washed through sinks and showers. Ms Ziajahromi explained: “Some overseas research in Europe and the US showed that some crops like tomato, wheat, corn and lettuce … are all contaminated with microplastics. And the microplastics were found inside the fruit”.
