Melbourne has emerged as the likely host of the 2026 Commonwealth Games | Exclusive

Melbourne has emerged as a likely host of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with the Victorian government confirming an approach from a desperate Commonwealth Games Federation faced with the embarrassment that no other city in its community of more than 50 nations is willing to bid for host-city status.

Commonwealth Games Australia chief executive Craig Phillips – bound by confidentiality provisions – said: “For a number of months now, we have been talking to a number of states about hosting the 2026 Games.” A CGF decision on the host city for 2026 was to be made in 2019 but the pandemic and the default of Durban as host city for 2022 changed the timetable. Birmingham, originally scheduled as 2026 host, filled the void left by Durban, thereby creating an embarrassing vacancy.

This is consistent with an election pledge of the incumbent Labor government that a future Commonwealth Games in the state would embrace regional centres.Credit:It is also consistent with the planning for the 2032 Summer Olympics, which will have a focus on south-east Queensland, not simply Brisbane.

No way! Have it in Canberra where the circus is now.

Hope they got the visa thing sorted till then.

Only bid lol

They will be held in regional towns, so Bonnie Doon, Dimboola, Drouin and Upotipotpon, here we come

Again LOL.

Would be great to have the Commonwealth Games here in Melbourne again.

getting a bit sick of the daily bazils soapbox.

DanielCherny What a boon for tourism! I’ll have to get in early to book a trip out of Melbourne for those two weeks.

Adelaide could host it too.

😄☝️☝️🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣what A Jock

😅🤣😂-this is a joke right?

Maybe we could invite a couple of non Commonwealth countries to add some interest.

Because no other country has put their hand up, Australia and VIC is deep in debt tax payers dollars are better spent on health and aged care, time to bury this, the Commonwealth is a reminder or British colonialism it needs to end !!

No; Melbourne has to be fixed up first. Faves should be held elsewhere.

If we aren’t in lockdown by then

Don't come we will be in lockdown or we will deport you ✌

Oh dear not again. Can we just give these games a proper burial.

No interest in this, especially in a climate where we don't know how long covid will be hanging around for.

As long as we don’t let in any anti-health hooligans then sure.

As a Victorian, I say no.

Optimistic

Nobody else wants it.

Is that still a thing?

Again....

Jesus, the triggered responses by the anti-vaxxers here are hilarious.

What a waste of taxpayers funds. Another black hole.

Does the rest of the world not want this stuff any more?

declanmartin75 👀👀👀

Novak Djokovic deported for trying to breach Australia’s border rules, PM says‘It’s as simple as that,’ Scott Morrison says, despite immigration minister not disputing tennis star’s belief he had valid vaccination exemption “The main problem with Australians isn’t that so many of them are descended from convicts, but that so many are descended from prison officers”. Clive James The fool is gone. Good. Move on. ...
