"Melton Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating and are keen to speak to any witnesses or anyone that may have seen any suspicious activity in the area," a police spokesman said.The horse was part-owned by Diggers Rest local Mark Ruff. His friend Frank Labombarda owns and runs the cafe.Mr Ruff said the trophy was one of a number made to celebrate the win and has been on display at the cafe since 2017.

"When we were lucky enough to be involved in the ownership of Rekindling ... we had our own version of the Cup from that year and it was proudly displayed at our local restaurant for two years," Mr Ruff told radio station RSN Racing & Sport. Rekindling ridden by jockey Corey Brown during their win at the 2017 Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse.He said they were hoping CCTV cameras at the train station across the road had caught the offenders."Unfortunately early Monday morning the 2017 Melbourne cup was stolen from Houdini’s Cafè è Cucina in Diggers Rest," they said on Monday.
