Foreign Minister Marise Payne has confirmed she has received a commitment from the Solomon Islands’ government that the country will not host a Chinese military base.

Earlier this week, China confirmed the two nations had agreed to the treaty which would see greater security cooperation and allow Honiara to call on Chinese troops to maintain social order.

Concerns had been raised that the pact could lead to China establishing a base on the Pacific nation less than 2,000 kilometres from Australian shores. “What’s important though is that that’s not just a statement to Australia or a commitment to Australia, it is a commitment to the entire pacific. The Australian government has been accused of not doing enough to prevent the concerning deal from going ahead, after Prime Minister Scott Morrison indicated he knew of the deal back in 2019.

“But this bilateral security agreement itself only became public and known to us through its exposure on social media in the Solomon Islands towards the end of march,” she said.

Signed and binded Contract is it ! As a ex serviceman this is our worst nightmare. Chinese Military Personnel, 100 Kilometers from Western Australia, with an Airport, able to conduct SPECAIL MILITARY OPERATIONS against Australia at a moments notice. Great Job SCOMO.

Don't we have nuclear subs ... ohhh, nevermind.

U know national security is a valid ground for exceptions even under WTO rules? National security concerns always trump 'free trade'.

I’m afraid the call is on CCP side but not the Solomon Islands side.

Who will help freerobertpether? An innocent Australian man held in arbitrary detention in Iraq for the past 12 months. Pleas by the UN to ScottMorrisonMP & MarisePayne have been ignored. Disgusting disregard & treatment by ausgov. auspol ausvotes

Looks though the commitment would last as long as Payne's term

Define “base”.

Once there it’ll be hard to get them out! Having said that, she believes the same bull chit feed to her by Politicians that she & her many colleagues (Politicians) have feed the Australian people regularly for decades, how ironic & naive.

How about something in writing?

Commitment? 🤔

We’ll see

Oh a commitment.. wow Maurice must be excited.. ffs what a a waste of time she and the whole Liberal Government are..

That's must. It must not end like Sri Lanka.

Verbal 'commitment' = Military base. Even putting words into writing with China will not mean anything to China.

Sure there will be no base..yep..ok..whatever.

But then the LNP promised an integrity commission and payment to aged care workers, so can’t complain when it goes off rail.
