The award-winning author will discuss why she returned to the world of The Handmaid's Tale three decades after publishing her cult classic.

The TestamentsThe announcement, which coincides with the Canadian writer's 80th birthday, comes just weeks after she jointly won Britain's prestigious Booker prize. While Atwood has appeared in Australia before, this is the first time she will conduct a local speaking tour of such size and scale.The three-week tour will kick off in Sydney in mid-February, followed by shows in Canberra, Brisbane, Melbourne, Hobart and Perth.

In a statement, the award-winning writer said she was excited to be returning to Australia, a country where "readers have always been so warm and welcoming"., a dystopian novel set in an environmentally ravaged North America, was first published in 1985. It quickly became a classic, touching on issues such as state-sanctioned violence and women's reproductive rights. More than 8 million copies of the book have been sold worldwide.

Tickets to Atwood's events go on sale to the general public from midday on Friday, November 29. The tour starts on Sunday, February 16, at the Sydney Harbour Theatre before she heads to Canberra, Brisbane, Melbourne, Hobart and Perth.
