A man suffering 'superficial wounds' reported he was bitten while swimming at Shelly Beach in Manly before sunrise this morning | jennynoise

Paramedics arrived at the scene to find a man in his 40s suffering "superficial wounds to his abdomen and left leg", a spokesman for NSW Ambulance said. The ambulance spokesman said it was unclear whether the man's injuries, described as "lacerations" and "scratches", were caused by a bite.He "thought he had been bitten" by a shark, and was able to swim to nearby rocks and raise the alarm.

A spokeswoman for NSW Police said some of the man's injuries could have been caused when he climbed onto the rocks in his effort to escape. A spokeswoman for Surf Life Saving NSW said the beach will be closed for 24 hours, which is standard procedure after reports of a shark incident. Lifeguards have erected signs and a drone pilot is doing surveillance for the rest of the day, she said.
