An experienced ocean swimmer who has conquered the English Channel is taken to hospital after being attacked by a shark at Manly Beach this morning, with witnesses saying he had a deep gash on his leg.

Peter Schultz was swimming with a group of locals near Shelly Beach — just south of Manly main beach — before sunrise this morning when he was bitten. Paramedics said the well-known ocean swimmer, who is part of the Manly-based Bold and Beautiful swimming club, was taken to hospital with a puncture wound to his back and injuries to his leg and abdomen.

Danny Lucas was also swimming at Shelly Beach this morning around the time of the attack and told ABC Radio Sydney he unsure what had happened. "We were about three quarters of the way to Shelly Beach when our group stopped and said someone was calling out," he said."But then we realised our friend had managed to actually swim to shore and was yelling for us to get out because he had been bitten by a shark.
