Brunton, who is returning to work temporarily in Britain after 25 years in Australia , says the complexities of managing super assets in countries with different retirement rules and currency risks can be overwhelming. "It's a nightmare," Brunton says.

"Which transfer company do I pick to minimise my tax risk and currency volatility? There are so many dodgy operators out there." Billions of dollars owned by hundreds of thousands of immigrants and expats are estimated to be in overseas funds and likely to be transferred to Australia during their work lives or retirement. The flow of super funds into Australia has been accelerating as immigration hits record highs and a recently weak dollar has made it more attractive to convert from foreign currencies, says transfer specialist
