Caravan use in general is booming. In 2009, Australians took 8.3 million caravan trips. Ten years later, in 2019, the number rose to 14 million trips. Older Australians still account for 2.5 million such journeys, says Fitzpatrick, but they’ve been usurped by younger midlife households with no kids and families .
Research suggests this growth is linked to wider trends in Australian life, particularly mass urbanisation. “Some 80 per cent of people live in or around major cities, but many grew up in the country, and want their children to experience that on holiday, or even for an extended period in a ‘real-life classroom’.”Caravans have changed, too, from a heavy white box on wheels to something more compact and safe – or something bigger and more luxurious.
Unsurprisingly, caravanning has become trendy, too, tapping into that very modern quest for “authenticity” and freedom: #vanlife. And growth is set to continue, says Fitzpatrick, as the pandemic settles in and international and interstate travel is restricted. “Whether it’s people wanting to go a little farther afield from home, or even attempt ‘the big lap’ of the country, as we come into this summer, we’re guessing that pent-up demand will explode.
