A man died of cardiac arrest while trying to defend a friend’s rural property against a bushfire near Batlow on Saturday night, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has confirmed.

Police say the 47-year-old man went to a nearby ute to retrieve water but didn't return.

The man's friend found him unconscious in the vehicle and drove until he met police. The man died at the scene Image: News Corp Australia

Did he die or was he killed? Seems like a significant distinction. To all those out fighting the fires, do your best to look after yourselves. Saving houses is great but we’d rather pay for a recovery effort than see more funerals.
