Thrashed in 2018, the Liberal leader is hoping to find redemption in this weekend’s Victorian election – but the polls are not on his side

Losing opposition leaders who had a second chance : Matthew Guy, who is contesting Saturday’s Victorian election, Bill Shorten, Jeff Kennett, Mark McGowan, Tony Abbott, Bob Carr, Lawrence Springborg and Nick Greiner.Losing opposition leaders who had a second chance : Matthew Guy, who is contesting Saturday’s Victorian election, Bill Shorten, Jeff Kennett, Mark McGowan, Tony Abbott, Bob Carr, Lawrence Springborg and Nick Greiner.Last modified on Thu 24 Nov 2022 23.

Opposition leaders are often given another shot straight away when they lead a party to an improved position without winning power. Thirteen out of 20 cases at state, federal and territory level since 1980 involved a politician in that position. This makes sense – sometimes a party is so far away from victory that you can’t expect them to gain back that ground all in one term.

Examples of this include Bill Shorten and Kim Beazley, who came close to winning federally after their party had been defeated in a landslide at the previous election, only to go on and lose a second time. It also includes people like Tony Abbott, Bob Carr , Ted Baillieu , Colin Barnett , Nick Greiner and Mike Rann , who went on to win on their second attempt.

A rare second chance! Because everyone else in his party is either a Pentecostal gun-waving loon, or drunk! auspol

‘the loser who lived’ is a good name for Matthew Guy

Matthew Guy is never going to lead the most progressive state in Victoria. Both major parties are shite anyway.

I always found John Howard's political career quite a series of turnarounds. He should've been edged out of politics in late 1970s to early 80s when the Bottom of the Harbour scam broke & he couldn't/ wouldn't deal with it as Treasurer. Then also, the Children Overboard lies..

Will it be back to his day job after this second failed bid?

And if Liberal wins I would bet $100 it will be *despite* him being the leader.

Matthew Guy is not ‘great on TV’The Australian Associate Editor John Ferguson says Victorian Opposition leader Matthew Guy has had a “pretty good campaign” but isn’t “great on TV”. “That’s probably his biggest downside, he’s just not someone who naturally looks good on TV,” Mr Ferguson said. “If you can’t project credibly on TV, it’s very hard to win the confidence of a large number of people.” Being 'good' or not on TV is not a prerequisite for Premier. Being honest, being able to recall who made a decision that prematurely killed over 800 Victorians and not completely ruining an entire state while dividing its residents is. Better than Daniel Andrew’s 🤨 PutLaborLast

Matthew Guy needs to ‘inspire’ Victorians that the ‘best days of the state lie ahead of them’Former Victorian Liberal Party president Michael Kroger says if Victorian Opposition leader Matthew Guy can get Victorians to “believe their best days are ahead of them”, then the Liberal Party has a good chance of winning the vote on Saturday. “This is what I say about the Liberal Party going forward … you basically have to inspire people to believe that their best days lie ahead of them, that the best days of the state lie ahead of them,” he told Sky News Australia. “This is where the Liberal Party focus now and into the future – in the moral working middle class. “The people with mortgages, the people driving a long way to work the people who are under pressure.” This guy?
