Australians may have hit peak toilet paper hoarding but signs are growing they are now storing away alcohol and buying home office equipment in preparation for months of movement restrictions.

Data compiled by both the ANZ and Commonwealth Bank, gleaned from their network of credit and debit cards and EFTPOS machines, suggest the worst of the surge in shoppers clearing out the tinned tomatoes and pasta aisles of supermarkets may be over.

ANZ economists Adelaide Timbrell and David Plank said it appeared people may not have much room left in their kitchen pantries or cupboards."A slowing of year on year growth in groceries and toiletries suggests that the average household is either stocked up already or becoming less concerned about supply chain issues for the essentials," they said.

But while some areas experience extraordinary growth, other parts of the retail sector have effectively ceased altogether. While bottles of beer and cider are selling out, the Commonwealth Bank found spending on alcohol services like pubs and hotels has slumped 49 per cent. Spending through restaurants and cafes has tumbled by 28 per cent with the ANZ finding a 14 per cent drop in takeaway sales.

Still cant buy bog roll anywhere in adelaide, wtf is it all going?

One question - Why couldn't I get my normal four pack quantity during this time. It seems to me that there was a deliberate decision to sell packs that were not necessary.

buying things makes me feel good

It’s comforting to know that some sectors of industry are thriving.

I have observed the 2 major supermarkets slowly releasing some grocery items at a higher price. Why are they not stocking shelves with their own brands, which were freely available earlier. They claim on morning tv that their shelves are full of stock. It’s wrong, they are empty.

I will take 20 ink cartridges! No! Better make it 40! I am not leaving my house for 2 years!! Idiots!!

And guns!

In management of the virus, it might be come in several waves of lockdowns?

At least its things I don't need and things I already have.

Home office has been tax deductible for years . . . but glad I purchased a pool table a few weeks ago.

How good is price elasticity if demand.

Still can’t find toilet paper in the local... I call BS on the TP hoarding.

Fortunatey had a decent home office to start with. Alcohol, better top up then.

This is what the supermarkets are hearing before they start restrictions and providing more options for home delivery....panicshopping

Could not believe it. Walked thru local supermarket today and toilet paper was sitting there, unattended, by itself. Had an urge to construct a Shrine and surround it with pasta (no incense available).
