Parents and advocates are calling on the government to address an inequality rooted in its parental leave scheme. AusPol 9News

Last year, Ms Underwood and Mr Baker started a similar parliamentary petition about the same issue, which attracted almost 700 signatures.

Parents at Work CEO and founder Emma Walsh said legislation for the government's parental leave scheme was introduced a decade ago at a time when the needs of dads were considered an afterthought. Rather than tweaking at the edges, wholesale reform was needed in order for Australia's parental leave offering to be brought in line with other OECD nations, Ms Walsh said.

The electorates where men retire with almost twice as much super as womenFigures show men’s retirement balances are almost twice the size of women’s in some electorates. The data has given ammunition to groups pushing for super to be paid on parental leave. Super is *designed* to give more money to men than women, replicate the inequalities of the labour market, and create retirement poverty. It's a total failure, and the solution is to throw out the current design and instead use the money to pay a higher aged pension to all. “Super on Parental Leave” - let’s not forget, the woman is entitled to 50% of their partners superannuation ... unless there’s a pre nup. Or we could just bring back an old age pension that is actually enough to live on? Radical I know, but the older women facing extreme poverty now aren't on parental leave. I know a lot of women who had their kids while they couldn't find paid work anyway.

We really need to get our priorities straight. Olympics need to be cancelled. The world is still struggling with covid. It's just not safe enough yet. Athletics aren’t essential.
