Marilyn's calm and weary observation has a familiar ring to it. Like more than 150,000 battered Victorians that night, she's come out of the storm of lockdown into yet another challenge to our formidable resolve, writes Virginia Trioli.

Marilyn is 72, and lives in her tall house with her partner Michael. He works in landscaping, and she told me yesterday that he had an uneasy feeling that evening, and packed small a bag for them and set it by the front door. At first, they tried to sleep through the gale, but moved to the bottom of the house, where the walls were made of brick, to get away from the roar of the wind.

"It seemed to happen in milliseconds … the brick wall and ceiling came down on me but I had wedged myself in the door frame — the door frame is what saved me.""And then it started — it was like one tree after the other." Shannon drove up to them in the howling rain, but soon found his way blocked by a wall of fallen trees. Another young woman was trying to get through. She was six months away from finishing her paramedic training, so they joined forces, left their cars and trekked 40 minutes over and through fallen trees to get to his mum.
