It is a project that has been in the works for more than 30 years: a new civic space for the global city of Australia – Town Hall Square.
My office overlooks what will be Town Hall Square. As light rail construction clears, people have enthusiastically reclaimed the area.Buskers play constantly and people are already using it to gather and relax throughout the day. It is clear the future Town Hall Square will be an important place for people in our city.
I welcome the plan to build a public park in Cockle Bay Wharf, and to connect the CBD with Darling Harbour. But these proposals need not come at the cost of people’s access to sunlight in the future Town Hall Square. That is why we developed a plan to guide the growth and development in the CBD and surrounds, the first of its kind in almost 50 years.
That is because the NSW government has been sitting on the plan for almost three years. It has never been put on public exhibition so it can come into effect.
