It’s a leap year, you see, and since Abbey Alvin and her nan Margaret Alvin were born on February 29 they wanted to make a splash.

They took a train at 6am from Bairnsdale to be at Station Pier, in Port Melbourne, to meet their ship for a four-night cruise. And why would they not? It’s a leap year, you see, and since Abbey Alvin and her nan Margaret Alvin were born on leap day — February 29 — they wanted to make a splash.

Abbey and Margaret on their last 'real birthday': February 29, 2016, when they turned 16 and 68 respectively. The cruise is a welcome stress release for the Alvin family: their homes in Bairnsdale were threatened by bushfire, and Abbey’s mother and two sisters were trapped in Mallacoota while holidaying and had to be evacuated."It was a very full-on week over Christmas and New Year so it’s nice that we can get away now and celebrate and have a few days off," Abbey says.

"My mum and dad landed here and didn’t know a soul and they had six children. How brave were they to do that?"State Library of Victoria
