The latest Victorian lockdown has added a staggering $15 million to the cost of running the competition in a matter of just three weeks.

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan told the 18 club presidents on Tuesday that the latest COVID-19 outbreak had increased the costs of running the competition by $15m - a figure that did not take into account lost revenue through reduced or lost crowds or other game-related revenues. The increased costs related to expenses such as charter flights, accommodation for players and officials who were flown out of state and quarantine. It is a measure of how the pandemic can impact adversely on the AFL, which bore the additional millions in costs, rather than the clubs.Getty Images

The Victorian clubs were forced to play out of the state for all of rounds 12 and 13, with Richmond having been forced to leave and play Adelaide in Sydney during round 11, when games were played in Melbourne in front of no crowds., rather than at the MCG, with both clubs forced to stay interstate for extended periods , while the round 13 Queen’s Birthday clash between Melbourne and Collingwood was shifted to the SCG.

In a presentation to club presidents on Tuesday, the AFL divided the clubs into three tiers - the big, the middle tier and the smaller market.

Another Dan Andrews failure!

I’m sure they’ll survive

How much is a life worth? Who cares if a multi-million dollar business loses a few million in order to save lives!!!

Who gives a crap.... I say this on behalf of my colleagues in the entertainment and the arts industry

'Staggering', '$15m blow'. Lol. AFLs revenue is $600-800 million. Some perspective pls. Also, noticed we couldn't watch a free to air game on Saturday (day) during lockdown, since the AFL sold its soul to Foxtel.

Lucky them that VicGovDH cancelled nearly all of the crowds in Geelong last week. Which hasn't seen a case since September 2020. Can't be too safe. Trust the science

Don’t have to tell me twice 😢

So sue the federal govt for recompense, they're the ones withholding vaccinations and quarantine facilities.

The AFL isn’t short of a coin 😂😂😂 ThisisNotJournalism

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

Luckily they have tax free status

thanksDan & you too, BrettShutton 🤡🤥

Travel back on the cards for Victorians as COVID numbers fallMelburnians will soon be able to travel freely to some parts of Australia and New Zealand as the latest coronavirus outbreak eases. Melbourne residents will be able to visit Auckland before they can visit Adelaide. I get that SAHealth and marshall_steven are quietly embarrassed that a failure in SA HQ led to this outbreak in Melbourne but the remaining restrictions look pretty absurd now. Totally don't care. Funny! We Melbournians can dust off the passport & head across the ditch to NZ…. but oh no! Not Queensland or WA 🤦🏻‍♀️🤭
