Everything was choreographed for the first day of a Shorten Labor government. There was no plan for what actually happened after the election.

There is, of course, a pragmatic reason to dump the target; it was set in 2015 and intended to be implemented over a 15-year period.

If Labor is elected in 2022, it would have just eight years to achieve it, a task made even more difficult by the fact that emissions have continued to rise in the meantime.Voters, they believe, were wary of the fact that the policy could not be costed and suspicious about what impact it could have on their hip-pocket.One Labor MP said the policy was — fairly or unfairly — considered"indulgent" by some voters who heard climate change and thought"expensive power bills".

The challenge for Labor is that surveys and public polling consistently show that an increasing number of Australians are concerned about climate change but not enough, it seems, to sway their vote.Beyond emissions, tensions are simmering over tax policy with several within Labor's parliamentary ranks convinced Mr Albanese will move to junk the, or modify it into something unrecognisably different to what was devised by former shadow treasurer Chris Bowen.

What was seen by Labor as a sensible move to"close an unfair loophole" , was vulnerable to relentless political attack and re-labelled a"retiree tax" by the Prime Minister, who put it at the centre of his campaign assault.Sign up

Can't let go of 'let's stick it up labor', eh, ?

After hitting the brick wall, AlboMP Labor party has decided that sitting on one is a better one. While, this incompetent government with it's corrupt members keep destroying Australia's future. auspol

Why not focus on the corruption?

Slow news day?

Don’t overanalyse AustralianLabor. You had great policies! You were undermined by scare campaigns and an ignorant voting public. Next time, campaign on one or two issues only

Labour completely underestimated just how hugely unlikeable and unpopular Shorten was across Australia.

WTF? We don’t care about the opposition years out from an election. We have rampant corruption, a PM making nice with a war monger who is threatening to nuke people and a govt that lies constantly. Do your job and focus on what matters!!!

Wow. I didn’t realise Labor had won the election. Given the amount of scrutiny it is getting it must have. Well at least it will give the LNP time to come up with some policies

How many articles will we see on the Labor loss ABC? And will you admit helping the Lieberals to your own detriment?

Do your job. This isn’t it.

Was Climate Change. The electorate were sick & tired of being lectured too with virtue signalling & the electoral climate changed. The End.

Bullshit Bill was running around the countryside on the road to nowhere fast looking like a total idiot with no vision and no plan for the future!!!! He was a modern day Bill Blowout!!!!!

This is why Labor crashed & burned, they listen to their rabid & divisive supporters, rather than their reasonable detractors. They have become so paranoid & combative that they can't tell an honest criticism from a carefully crafted attack, so they hide away in an echochamber.

Navel gazing, gotta love it. 🤣

Abc has lost the plot. There is a completely incompetent government it can report on. Were in a per capita recession, despite 1% rates & a windfall resources export of $264 billion. Its not that easy to induce a recession in these conditions.

Jeez, can you guys take a look at, hmm I don’t know, maybe the current Liberal Government, the ones who’ve been governing for THE PAST 6 YEARS?! Seriously, this is getting past a joke!

Interesting read 👍🏽

And instead of framing themselves as an alternative, they risk the question 'what is the point of the Labor party?'. Minimizing differences never worked either.

I don't vote Labor but I was hoping the Shorten mob would get a go at bringing in real policies and lead us into the next decade and beyond. We will never know now. The Australian voting public seems to be made up of a bunch of non-visionary money grubbers.

And the country breathed a sigh of relief.

Labor is no longer Labor and it spent a lot of energy telling it's traditional base they are racist, bigoted and the cause of climate change! Playing up to minorities for virtue points great idea keep that going! fools

Labour did not move too far left. Nor should they pull centrist - therein lies a Liberal Party clone. The election was lost in Qld because Labour's message was repeatedly negative (on fossil fuel - jobs) instead of positive (on renewable alternatives - more jobs).

Seems incredible that still bizarrely focusing on Labor (Labor! Labor!!), here on some speculative fantasy day that never even actually occurred, when there is an actual government that is just a tad newsworthy you'd think.

Pretty much... sort of like a smashed crab 😂

Shut up abc news! Focus on the elected dysfunctional government!

I know someone who works for ALP in my electorate & who was telling HQ what was going on about death tax etc before the election.Had zero support from ALP HQ who don't listen to feedback. Stop giving power to 20 somethings with a political degree. AlboMP DrCraigEmerson

Morrison and all his incredibly dodgy ministers had an easy ride with the ABC, the Murdoch media, Kerry Stoke's media interests along with scare campaigns on Facebook and anti Labor ads from Clive Palmer. That's why we have this appalling government now.

Thanks ABC for yet another analysis of what is wrong with Labor. Now how about some analysis of all that is wrong with the LNP and all their shitty policies.
