There have been the losses: three to England in the space of three weeks in 2016, a 42-8 disaster in the Bledisloe Cup that same year, Scotland in Sydney in 2017, Argentina at home in 2018 and aCredit:By the same token, there have been some unexpected victories and flashes of brilliance: New Zealand in 2017 and then again this year in Perth, as well as the Salta miracle where the side came back from 31-7 down at half-time against Argentina to save themselves from further embarrassment.

“We’re ready to go,” Hooper said. “We’ve had so much time now to be thinking about this moment. We’re here now, we want it to be 1.45 tomorrow already. At Friday's captain's run players slowly walked around the Sapporo Dome – an arena Hooper said was nothing like anything they had seen before – and paused at various points on the field to form a huddle and chat. The group is intensely focused on making sure they are 100 per cent ready to come good on the thousands of hours of work that have gone into this campaign.
