I LOVE that every other person in the world can have an opinion on teachers, their rights, their pay, their holidays, their efforts, their curriculum, their everything. I don’t tell a doctor how to work or what they should do. ATAR does not a teacher make.

I am offended that tanya_plibersek seems to have little idea what it actually takes to be a teacher. A child’s first teacher is their parent. How about leveling some responsibility for student outcomes at the home?

The word ‘teacher’ is outdated and should be replaced or redefined. It doesn’t actually define what the job is. It is of little wonder why so many graduate teachers leave the profession so quickly. 🙄

What about people with criminal convictions?I thought if you had a criminal conviction you could not obtain a position in the public service (unless you have connections)?

Reaction to the thought of a labor government

The more students you allow to complete degrees, the lower standards will fall. It's all good & well to want to become a 'Smart Country' but that shouldn't mean opening the floodgates on university entry, as we have seen since the 1980s.

unis have been cheating by deliberately over enrolling just to scoop as much HECS n to grab as much foreign fees Outrageous

About time

Try paying teachers a decent salary and then you night attract the calibre of people you want!

Labor never threatens any one just making education better for all you are entitled to your opinion without your venom

An essential action to take if we are to produce good teachers

👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Labor is being rather presumptuous, isn’t it? Anyway, what student who can do medicine or law will want to teach? Not disparaging teachers as two of our daughters teach. It would be nice to have the best of the best teach. But they will have to be paid commensurate with talent.

Threatens or promises?

Teacher are now just child minders! Nothing more!

Why 'threatens' this is is sorely needed

Labor , via the unions has made men in the teacher industry almost untenable as a teaching model and now many schools are women teacher only , What labor and the unions have effectively done is remove half the worthy teachers for gender identity politics

There was a time when only our smartest went to university. They’ve now become money churning behemoths with little regard to their fee paying students. They don’t care about a student’s capacity to undertake degrees. It’s all about the dollars to be made.

Labor threatens cap on teaching degree numbers to address low ATAR entry scoresTanya Plibersek has warned universities to introduce higher standards and train up only the 'best and brightest' as the teachers of tomorrow. “Threatens” .. watch your language SMH. Suggesting a sensible look at standards is not a threat. The only way to make teaching meaningful is to stop bureaucratising teachers and allow them to teach specific groups, not statistical means. Fail for both ALP and Coalition in understanding education, let alone delivering it. 'Labor attacks universities'

Low-scoring students to be barred from becoming teachers under Labor planIn a bid to improve results in the classroom, Tanya Plibersek says a Labor government would restrict entry to the top 30 per cent of students if the education sector does not take action sooner. The word she used was specifically 'restrict'. The word 'barred' has a totally different meaning altogether. Do better. Stop misrepresenting people and issues. Words matter. Low-scoring ATAR students will be barred from being teachers? So who will be teachers then? So short-sighted. If you're artificially setting an ATAR of 80, you'd better be upping wages to match professions also requiring 80.

Labor threatens to bar low scoring students from teaching degrees | Sky News AustraliaDeputy Labor leader Tanya Plibersek has called for universities to restrict entry to only the top 30 per cent of students, saying ‘Labor wants the best and brightest Australians studying teaching’. \n\nMs Plibersek has threatened to introduce mandatory entry scores for teaching degrees if universities don't toughen their standards. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n SarahLVogler It’s a bit simplistic to look at one dimension. But it does explain the poor quality of journalism. SarahLVogler Hardly likely that teaching standing will increase whilst the left are in control of our Universities! SarahLVogler Pay teachers more! Incentivise the pay, lift the score for Uni entry and give teachers the dignity, respect and status they deserve. Then encourage & help YOUR children to study and comprehend the things the teachers are teaching, ditch the Naplan, then you'll see improvement 👍
