Bill Shorten is expected to become our next Prime Minister according to this new exit poll. AusVotes Auspol

The Coalition remains ahead of Labor on the primary vote, 39 to 38 per cent.

This marks a much more narrow gap than the previous election, in whcih the Coalition led by 32.1 to 34.7 per cent. The final Newspoll of the campaign has Labor ahead of the coalition 51.5 to 48.5 on a two-party preferred basis, while the latest Ipsos poll shows Labor in front 51-49.

The Liberal campaign has focused on economic management while taking aim at Labor’s plan to reform negative gearing and franking credits as well as boost the nation’s ambition on carbon emission cuts. Labor has spent most of its time talking about health, climate, education and the need to make the tax system fairer while highlighting leadership chaos in the Liberals.

Both major parties are promising to deliver a federal budget surplus in the coming financial year — the first in 12 years — and keep the books in the black in future years.

Why do some Labor types hope Tony Abbott wins Warringah? Some on the ALP side relish the thought of the Coalition losing the election but Abbott holding his seat - to ensure a divided Liberal Party in opposition. JacquelineMaley Interesting take, because as I remember it Abbott was quite effective at taking on the govt when last in opposition. Politically effective that is. JacquelineMaley It is like LiberalAus saying let's hope billshortenmp says on as leader when AustralianLabor say they hope TonyAbbottMHR wins. In Bills case they don't think he'll win, in Tonys case, the picture of the wreckage after bull in a china store comes to mind

Morrison dangles 5pc deposit for first home buyers, before Labor matches policyThe Morrison Government and Labor agree on a plan to lower the deposit threshold for first home buyers to five per cent. Old school political election nonsense and lies this crap is Morrison dangles. 🤣🤣🤣 The LNP campaign has been long on rhetoric, fear, uncertainty and doubt, and pork-barrelling specific electorates, but very short on a policy platform. The fact is, if the LNP was seriously committed to their new policies they'd have introduced them in the past 6 years.
