Labor’s 36 per cent primary vote in the Eden-Monaro by-election underlines how the ALP is “being deserted by hard working Australians” according to Sky News contributor Campbell Newman.

| Labor’s Kristy McBain secured a victory in the by-election on Sunday afternoon, but the party recorded its lowest primary vote in the seat for 30 years.

Mr Newman said the election results equally highlight an issue for the Liberal Party, “A prime minister with a stratospheric approval rating hasn’t moved the needle”. “There needs to be some soul searching about why this is the case in the Liberal Party”. Image: Getty

I thought Labor won?

As someone who was deserted by voters, Newman is an expert on the subject

probably not a good idea to get analysis on election results from a man who was a premier of a state when he lost his seat at the last queensland election

Trust to put a negative spin on a Labor win. Let’s make the results clear - Labor won, Liberals LOST. RoyalCommissionIntoAustMedia

You still trying to provide him with relevance ❓He couldn’t even find relevance as a Chief Minister ❗️🧐🎤

Whats the difference between Labor & the Greens!

Newman was deserted by everyone, so he's naturally feeling upset about that. Eventually enough time will pass and he'll feel better. Congrats to Labor on the Eden-Monaro win!

Does he mean like The hundreds of thousands of Queenslanders who ran from him at the first chance.

Remind me again how Campbell Newman fared in the last election he was involved in...

But they still won right? Without sport rorts or fraudulent and misleading election signs yes? That's ok then..

Labor won, cry a little harder!

Labor cannot hide behind the pandemic when it comes to Eden-Monaro: Credlin | Sky News AustraliaLabor is already blaming COVID-19, rather than Anthony Albanese, for its performance in the Eden-Monaro by-election, according to Sky News host Peta Credlin.\n\nLabor’s primary vote is down by 3.86%, with the party’s candidate Kristy McBain relying on a strong result in pre-polling to get her over the line.\n\nDuring a heated exchange with Labor’s deputy leader Richard Marles, Ms Credlin said COVID-19 cannot re-write history. \n\n“You can’t hide from the fact, mate, it reflects on your leader,” Ms Credlin said.\n\n“In 100 years, what we didn’t have world wars? We didn’t have other global issues? We didn’t have things like the GFC? … There are plenty of things that have happened in the last 100 years. This pandemic is important but it’s not seismic that it rewrites history.”\n\n“We’re talking about an opposition seat which has been held by less than 2 per cent, it’s on 0.9 per cent. That’s the precondition which would give rise to a circumstance where an opposition could lose a seat to the government,” Mr Marles replied.\n\nIf Liberal Party candidate Fiona Kotvojs won Eden-Monaro, it would be the first time in over 100 years a government has won a seat off an opposition in a by-election.\n AlboMP I’m surprised Peta didn’t blame the South Sudanese AlboMP She would say that wouldn't she. And don't mind that Labor is currently holding the seat. What was the swing? AlboMP

Labor claims victory in Eden-Monaro | Sky News AustraliaLabor candidate Kristy McBain has claimed victory over her Liberal counterpart Fiona Kotvojs in the hotly contested Eden-Monaro by-election.\n\nWith just over 80 per cent of the votes counted, Ms McBain leads Ms Kotvojs by 1,335 votes.\n\nShe said she will focus on the bushfire recovery effort when she arrives in Canberra and promised to work in a bipartisan manner to help the region.\n\nLabor's primary did drop between three and four per cent, however preferences allowed the party to get over the line in the tight contest.\n\nMs McBain told reporters on Sunday voters were concerned about local issues.\n\n'Voters were speaking to me about the issues they were having, the experiences they had, their issues with jobkeeper, worrying about what will happen with bushfire relief, worrying about how they’re going to make it through the summer, you know, worrying about the future of jobs for their kids in the region, worrying about healthcare issues, local roads, telephone black spots right across the regions.'\n\n“No – the issues people were telling me, their local issues on the ground.” oops, your biased predictions didn't go so good.
