Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus has been accused of attempting to replace the AAT with a new body that will be stacked by Labor from the start.

According to shadow Attorney-General Julian Leeser, this amounts to a “purge” and is all about “settling political scores”.

“This is simply about Mark Dreyfus purging a vital legal institution and settling scores with his political enemies.” Having been involved in appointments to the AAT during the final term of the Morrison government, Ms Stoker disputed the significance of the new appointment process. Former assistant minister to the attorney-general Amanda Stoker said the introduction of a merit-based selection process was a smokescreen. Picture: NCA NewsWire / Gary Ramage
