'Red flames like giant devil’s tongues lapped up the trees around us, thunder from the fire’s own weather system boomed and crashed, winds threw flames to the side, above and beyond, koalas shrieked as they burnt alive in their habitat.'

We decided to head to the jetty to escape the radiant heat that could have killed us as much as the flames.

On the beach in Mallacoota, we speak of inaction on climate change and a leader who publicly puts money and coal before people and the planet. Mallacoota residents and tourists aboard HMAS Choules as it leaves the Victorian coastal town for Melbourne. But spirits are strong. We applaud the volunteer firefighters and salute the shopkeepers, chemist, doctors and publican who have opened their doors.

This is the first of so many kindnesses from the crew of HMAS Choules that still make me cry. We set up camp on the pet deck, our Oki with 135 dogs, four cats, a rabbit and a parakeet. We sleep on stretchers around the wheels of military vehicles and agree on a roster to keep the pets calm.I am claustrophobic at first, as I get lost down tiny corridors and stairwells. But we all soon settle.

Was it necessary to be super graphic with the heading and wording? It’s distressing enough with the photos and videos of injured animals that we see throughout media the past few months. Show some sensitivity during these difficult times please! AustralianBushfire

How many of these fires could have been prevented if ScottMorrisonMP had met with Greg Mullins and taken his advice and increased aerial capability. Or if billshortenmp had won the election and implemented his bush fire plan. I weep for Australia and it’s wildlife and forests

I am crying 😢

no, it's states and councils' wilful neglect of fire reduction hazard and don't let their actions be whitewashed as happened after official 'let it burn' policy destroyed half of Canberra

'we speak of inaction on climate change and a leader who publicly puts money and coal before people and the planet.' Just watched PM snubbing Pacific leaders n blocking COP25 resol
