A cool breeze and clear skies greeted the 58 weary people on board MV Sycamore when it docked at the Western Port on Saturday morning, ending a horror week

There was food and water, spaces to rest, medical staff and an area set up for the 150 animals – that included cats, dogs, rabbits and a parrot – on board the ships to be assessed.

Police convoys have been arranged, and the buses transporting evacuees will be given priority on the roads, southern metro Superintendent Sharon McKinnon said. “It’s devastating, so devastating to see. All the tin is flat to the ground, some of the bricks are still standing. There was no way we could’ve stayed.”
