Australian job seekers are being warned of convincing new scams targeting people looking for work via social media. 7NEWS

“Can be done without affecting your current job, earn up to $300-$500 per day,” one ad promises. But the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says if it’s too good to be true, then it likely is.

“What they need to do is make bookings at a hotel or buy goods from the store, and are told they’ll be paid back and get a commission,” Delia Rickard of the ACCC said.In reality, however, victims are having their personal information stolen and, potentially, their bank accounts drained.Australians aged 25 to 44 reported the biggest losses and that’s believed to be because people in this demographic frequently change jobs.

However, Rickard said that was likely the “tip of the iceberg” because most didn’t report their losses.Recruitment scam red flags include being told to act quickly to secure the role, being offered a job without an interview, handing over personal details like bank account numbers or being asked to transfer money to a third party.

Rickard asked anyone who thinks they are caught up in a recruitment scam to contact Scamwatch and said they could seek help from cyber support charity IDCARE.
