Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce says Australia must not show naivety towards an olive branch extended by Beijing’s new ambassador, warning there must remain a number of non-negotiables in the relationship.
But he said that would always be balanced with Beijing’s actions such as economic coercion, assertiveness in the South China Sea, freedom of media in Hong Kong and human rights issues such as the treatment of tennis star Peng Shuai. The wellbeing of Peng, a Wimbledon doubles champion and former world No.14 singles player, has been a concern for weeks after she“Yes, I want there to be peace, but I will do it with eyes wide open and making sure we have a harmonious relationship,” Mr Joyce said.
Mr Joyce said Mr Albanese should be calling on China to remove the more than $20 billion of tariffs imposed in response to various Australian moves including calling for a global inquiry into the origins of COVID-19 and banning Chinese telecom giant Huawei from its 5G rollout.“If you’re going to remove exemptions, remove the lot.

Another naive statement from Barnaby Know Nothing.
But we should try to have good relations with China. Why is this government pissing off so many countries?
Obviously. If china is no longer the enemy than people will have nothing to distract them. And then they will realise the shitshow we’re in and hold them accountable. So off course never trust china! Always trust the government! 😉
Spitting in the (ASIAN) face of those who offer the hand of friendship + forgiveness... thus selling the country short for some perceived politix-is-local short-term advantage... 😶 ...worse that they just signed up to a military alliance with war criminal nation JAPAN...
Confuscious or Sir Les Patterson?
Says the man who’s coalition made Australians buy Chinese RATs rather than promote Australian manufacturers
I trust the Chinese more than Joyce
This is the same flog who is all for turning prime farm land into coal mines to sell coal to the Chinese.
This administration has double standards. To maintain its hard posture towards China, it should discourage any trade between Australia and China. Having your cake and eating it weakens you in the face of your adversary. Novices!
Isn't he supposed to say: Australia must not hold naivety towards USA having our back when we do what they bid to confront our biggest customer?
Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce says Australia must not show naivety towards a new olive branch extended by Beijing’s new ambassador Adding 'Look Gina said she really needs to keep selling her coal to them, so I actually have to do something try and fix that one for her'
Just piss on it! It is the australian way. And blame Novak...
F*ck the CCP
Is anyone taking notice of what Barnaby says? LOL
It wasn't really an olive branch. Chinese govt said Australia must correct its actions. Australia should not be sucked in but decouple as much and as quickly as possible. Move production to SE Asia, diversify markets, avoid Made in China where feasible.
The Australian genocidal war criminals regime is looking for Armageddon. Watch 'Reaction Video: 60 Minutes Australia Prepare for Armageddon - War with China' on YouTube
Because it doesn't suit their fear based election narrative.
This government is so, so crap at diplomacy. Of course they should think this, but why SAY it No wonder everyone hates us these days.
