An outpouring of tributes on social media praised his achievements in what was a less authoritarian period in China’s history, many seen as an indirect criticism of the current president.

comes at a sensitive time for Xi Jinping as he faces an unprecedented challenge to his power and negative comparisons to a predecessor who led China’s transformation into a market economy.

Former Australian prime minister John Howard, who met Mr Jiang on numerous occasions when both men were leaders, said they had a productive relationship and a personal rapport which helped improve Sino-Australian relations following their first meeting in 1996. Mr Jiang was chosen by Deng Xiaoping to lead the Communist Party after the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre. Although he maintained a hardline stance on dissent, Mr Jiang led China through a period of booming economic growth and oversaw its entry to the World Trade Organisation. He remained in power until 2004, when he gave up his last official title.

“The template for the relationship was established at that Manila meeting. I said to him ‘we had a lot of differences, let’s focus on things we have in common’,” Mr Howard said.
