The former Chinese president died at the age of 96 of leukaemia and multiple organ failure, according to state media.
He was known for breaking the country out of its subsequent diplomatic isolation and overseeing an economic boom. Jiang died in his home city of Shanghai at 12:13pm local time on Wednesday, the official Xinhua news agency said, publishing a letter to the Chinese people by the ruling Communist Party, parliament, Cabinet and the military announcing the death.
This goes a long way to explain why he was led out of the Party meeting a few weeks back. No sinister plot, he was seriously ill.
