The Canberra rail driver who died in the Wallan train derailment on Thursday night has been identified as 54-year-old Canberra man John Kennedy

"It was the thing that he loved to do. He'd worked in different parts of the business over the years, and had also driven freight trains," he said. The NSW Rail, Tram and Bus Union said it was supporting members in the wake of the tragedy, "which would send shockwaves through the whole, tight-knit, railway community".

In a joint statement, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Regional Transport Minister Paul Toole said they were "heartbroken" and working with the Victorian and federal government to determine what happened. Teams from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, Victoria's Chief Inspector of Transport Safety and NSW's Office of Transport Safety Investigations are on scene to investigate the cause of the incident.
