A play, entirely performed in Ukrainian, is helping those who have recently fled their home stay connected to their culture — and is creating a community along the way.

When Yaryna Yablonska asks her daughters, aged four and 11, what they want for their birthdays, their answer is simple yet consistent: they want their father.

To stay connected to her culture, she has joined a theatre group, known as the Motanka theatre, which performs traditional Ukrainian plays in their native tongue. Ukrainians in Canberra are performing in the Motanka theatre as a way of keeping their language alive.
