Both the prosecution and defenses have laid out their cases in a US courtroom over the actions of Mohamed Noor, who is charged with murdering Australian Justine Damond Ruszczyk.

A police officer in Minnesota shot dead an unarmed Australian woman in 2017 because he feared an ambush, the man's attorney told jurors Tuesday in opening arguments of a trial closely watched in the US and Australia.

Mohamed Noor, the former Minneapolis police officer who is charged in the killing of Justine Damond Ruszczyk.Mr Noor was in the responding police cruiser, and shot Ms Damond Ruszczyk when she approached the car. He and his partner Matthew Harrity had feared they were trapped in"a classic ambush," Mr Wold said, which he said prompted Mr Noor to shoot in self-defense. MORE NEWSThe officers had feared an ambush because they had been forced to stop in the alley behind Ms Damond Ruszczyk's home for a passing bicyclist.

Hennepin County prosecutor Patrick Lofton sought to sow doubts about the claims of a loud, sudden noise that startled the officers.
