A technical error has denied Australian teenager Isaac Cooper a world title and new junior world record after swimming a time faster than the eventual winner.

Australian swimmer Isaac Cooper says an apology from World Aquatics won’t make up for the pain of a farcical technical error that robbed the young swimmer of a maiden World Championship on a controversial night in Melbourne.

Three of the eight competitors - in lane one, second and seven - heard the beep and stopped swimming. They believed a false start occurred. Isaac Cooper is consoled by Ryan Murphy of the United States after the re-swim of the men’s 50m backstroke final.“I heard a second horn and I thought I’m here at worlds, I’m not going to stop in case everyone else keeps going,” Cooper told reporters. “The reality is normally there is a rope at 15 [metres] that will drop to stop the swimmer. That wasn’t there in this situation.”

World Aquatics issued an apology before the re-swim took place in what was a major blunder for the governing body.“Life just keeps throwing shit at me and I just keep on pushing through,” Cooper said. “I’ve gone through so many low points and all I want to do is be able to stand on top. Every time I get close, I get knocked back again.

“If I can come back from this I know I will be a better person and athlete. Hopefully I can set an example around sportsmanship. “They’ve got to notify the athletes. This is rubbish,” Thorpe said before the re-swim. “There should have been a drop [of a rope to stop athletes swimming]. There’s a huge disadvantage to those that have continued.”“I thought it was a horrible thing that happened,” Thorpe said. “Unfortunately in sport ... it isn’t who deserves it the most. Sport often is not fair.
