All the self-care in the world isn’t going to help if the stress is caused by unrealistic expectations at work.

Workplace experts and wannabe experts have been pitching me stories on “burnout” for years but the volume has picked up in the past few months.as a medical condition. The pitches usually come in the form of well-meaning advice about how individuals can prevent themselves from burning out by looking after themselves better. We should all exercise, eat well, meditate and stay away from email between the hours of 5pm to 9am.But hold on, employers need to take some responsibility here as well.

It is probably not a coincidence that the same survey showed nearly three out of four organisations had no system in place to ensure employees take their annual leave. In a significant number of organisations, 5 per cent of staff - that’s one in every 20 employees - is not taking annual leave outside of forced-shutdown periods.

Employers should take note. After all, it’s part of the very definition of burnout that it makes employees less energetic, less committed, less positive and less effective when it comes to their jobs.
