'It's like cancelling Christmas': Chinese community to celebrate amid coronavirus fears

China Eastern Airlines announced on Friday that it was cancelling all flights between Sydney and Wuhan until March 29. “The government is now working much more proactively and transparently to contain the Wuhan pneumonia than [it did with] SARS,” says Ning Zhang. He says Australia is vulnerable to “quite a lot of traffic from China to Australia” but that the mortality rate was lower than the SARS pandemic in 2003 and, so far, the disease appeared to have less severe symptoms.In Chinese tradition, red is one of the luckiest colours. “There is always going to be chicken on the table, means we are celebrating something. We always eat noodles. Noodles are for a long life,” he says. “Then some fish. Fish is about making sure there is always going to be something left over at the end of the year.”
